Tasting: Caprice de Bastor-Lamontagne

Name: Caprice de Bastor-Lamontagne
Variety: 60% Semillon, 36% Sauvignon Blanc, 4% Muscadelle
Region: Sauternes
Country: France
Year: 2004
Price: $7.95

Winery review: Very clean, with lemon, mineral and honey aromas that follow through to a medium body. Shows vanilla, apple and melon flavors, with a medium finish. Lightly sweet.

My review: After reading about Sauternes in Kevin Zraly's Windows on the World Complete Wine Course, I was thrilled to see it on this week's tasting list at Vintage Cellar. It smelled so strongly of honey that it was almost like a jar of it. Tasting it, I found that it was almost mead-like in nature but with a mild acidity and a lot of balance. I was surprised and somewhat underwhelmed by this wine, as it was not what I expected when I was reading about it but did not dislike it and would consider purchasing it in the future.
